Broadhall Way, or the Lamex Stadium, has a capacity of 6,722. For the match against Pompey, 4,092 fans attended, with 1,500 of those being away fans. This does not reflect especially well on the home fans, who were fairly quiet for the majority of the game. The ground itself, however, was very nice, however small it was. The pitch was in almost perfect condition with the exception of the goalmouths, and the whole away end was allocated seats. This made everything easier for the away fans, who were able to fully enjoy their day out. The one negative aspect was that there was only one entrance for away fans to use, making it very difficult and time consuming to enter and leave the ground. This led to there being huge queues at the beginning and end of the match but, considering the result, nobody minded too much!
The ground was well supplied by public transport links, with Stevenage station having a shuttle bus service directly t the ground for only £1. There was also an away fan friendly pub called the Old Post Office directly opposite the station, where fans were able to watch Bt Sport or Sky Sports on a variety of TV screens. The journey itself was fairly easy from the Portsmouth area, with fans being able to take a train to London Victoria, then the tube to King’s Cross, then a direct train to Stevenage. This meant that it was possible to complete the journey in little over two and a half hours. This was perfect for fans, as the journey would have taken far longer if the trains had not worked out so well.
Overall, the ground was very nice and comfortable for fans, and I would welcome the opportunity to return there. The away fans were very well looked after, and the transport to the ground was very well coordinated. The only negative aspect was the lack of entrances to the away section, but it didn’t seem to be too much of a hindrance on the day. The Stevenage fans seemed fairly quiet, but could be heard at the times during the game. I think the whole experience of the away game was very good, made even better by the smoothness of the journey and, of course, the result!
